A scion of well-reputed  century old “Saharia” family of Assam, with primary interest in plantation and agro-forest industries,  Mahesh  Kumar Saharia graduated in Commerce and subsequently had specialization in Plywood Technology from IPIRI, Bangalore. 

Mr.Saharia, as the President of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce (1991-1993), the premier and oldest employers’ organization in India, had made notable contributions in the matter of making the concept of “Economic Liberalization” popular and acceptable to the industrialists of the country.

 Mr Saharia is the Chairman of Centre for Promotion of India- China Cooperation, an organization established for close cooperation between two countries in various fields and activities. He was appointed Honorary Advisor to China-South Asia Business Forum in 2010. 

Mr.Saharia is the Chairman of the North Eastern Initiative of Indian Chamber of Commerce, which is promoting Investment in the North East India.  His work and efforts on connectivity of India particularly North East with immediate neighbors Bangladesh and Bhutan in South Asia and with ASEAN Countries and China through Myanmar is greatly recognized and is gradually bringing results. ICC, under his Chairmanship has organized several events including North East Business Summit at Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata and Mumbai, ‘North East Business Week’ at Bangkok, Vietnam. 

Mr Saharia has done an extensive study on connectivity between South East Asia, South Asia and China and has been advocating the reopening of the famous Stilwell Road connecting Ledo in India to Kunming in China via Myanmar besides advocating super highways and Transnational Railway connectivity amongst the region. 

Mr.Saharia, as Honorary Life Member and Former Executive Committee Member, represented Indian business interest in the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Headquartered in Islamabad, Pakistan. Mr.Saharia was the Chairman for successive terms of the Steering Committee of International Mega Event “South Asian Business Leaders Conclave“ organized by SCCI   in  collaboration with World Bank and FNST  in 2005 , 2007 and  2009. The First SBLC was held at New Delhi in 2005 and was inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh. The next was held at Mumbai in 2007 and was inaugurated by Sri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble External Affairs Minister of India. The 3rd SBLC was held at Colombo in 2009 and was inaugurated by  Hon’ble Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. He has been honored by the SAARC Chamber as Honorary Life Member

Mr Saharia has also been the Regional President of Indo American Chamber of Commerce (EIC) and is an Executive committee Member of its National body. Mr.Saharia is/has been a member of the Managing Committee of ASSOCHAM / Executive Committee Member of FICCI and also the Chairman of Indo- BIMSTEC Business Promotion Council. 

Mr Saharia had the unique honor to have been invited as ‘Presidential Friends of Indonesia’ in 2010 and attended the Independence Day Ceremony of Indonesia on 17th August, 2010 at Istana Mardeka or State Palace, Jakarta as a Guest of Honor. Subsequently President of Indonesia was pleased to pass a degree appointing him as Honorary Consul of Indonesia at Kolkata. 

Mr Saharia is a regular invitee at different Forums in his various capacities to share his views on South Asia some of which are : 

Mr.M.K.Saharia was invited by International Development Centre of Japan co-sponsored by Government of Japan in November, 1998 to speak on “REGIONAL COOPERATION IN TRADE in the matter of ECONOMIC INEGRATION IN SOUTH ASIA. The meeting was attended by Opinion makers including University Heads, Diplomats, representative of several NGO’S and Agencies working in the region, Departmental Heads of Government of Japan, Representatives of Government of United Kingdom, Businessmen from Japan and South Asia.

Mr.Saharia was subsequently invited at Wilton Park, U.K. in October, 1999 as a Guest of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to speak on “SOUTH ASIA : HOW CAN CLOSER REGIONAL COOPERATION BE ACHIEVED”.Amongst Policy Practitioners, Academicians, Parliamentarians, Ambassadors, Journalists, Senior representatives of Government of almost all West European Countries, Mr. Saharia was the sole representative of the Business community. 

In October,2006 Mr.Saharia was the only Asian to be invited at Greece by Euro congress to hear his views on “Europe and Globalisation – the competitiveness challenge”.


A great champion of clean environment, Mr. Sahara is known amongst his friends as Green-man. He has been the Chairman of Environment Committee of the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce and has been responsible for initiating several projects towards pollution control and environmental protection.

As the President of The Agri-Horticultural Society of India (1995-96) in its 175th year, Mr.Saharia was instrumental in organising the Agri-Horti Fair’96 which was inaugurated by the President of India, the Chief Patron of the Society. He  is a Life Member of the several environmental organisations including Dahlia Society of India, Rose Society, World Wide Fund for Nature, Cacti and Succulent Society of India and also the Founder Trustee of “Horticulture Development Foundation” 

A keen grower and gardener, he has won several prizes in Flower Shows. 


Mr.Saharia is a very keen Photographer with several solo exhibitions and awards to his credit and was awarded an Honorary Diploma and Life Time Achievement Award by the American Image Press and International Freelance Photographers Organisation, New York in the year 2004. A great promoter of various forms of arts and artist, he possesses a very large collection of works of art, antiques and curios. 


He, as the Vice-Chairman of the Managing Committee of S P R Saharia Educational Society, has been in the management of several educational establishments. He  is on the Board of  Governors of St.Thomas School for Boys and St. Thomas School for Girls, Kolkata.

Mr. Saharia has received various awards and recognitions and was recently awarded  by the "Chinese World Oversees Congress 2010" with "World Emissary Award" at Xian. He is credited with many writings on socio-economic, socio-political and environmental subjects.
