about Yunnan

The Pillar of Yunnan's economy includes tobacco, agriculture, mining and tourism. The main manufacturing items are iron and steel production and copper-smelting, commercial vehicles, chemicals, fertilizers, textiles, and optical instruments. Yunnan is very strategically located as a gateway to South East Asia and South Asia and has trade contacts with more than seventy countries and regions in the world.

Yunnan mainly exports tobacco, machinery and electrical equipment, chemical and agricultural products, and non-ferrous metals. It is one of the major production bases of copper, lead, zinc, tin and aluminium in China. Besides, reserves of germanium, indium, zirconium, platinum, rock salt, sylvite, nickel, phosphate, mirabilite, arsenic and blue asbestos are also high. Significant copper deposits, iron ore and coal are found at various places. The electricity industry is another important economic pillar of Yunnan. There are tremendous opportunities in mining including bauxite, titanium and manganese besides others.

As the provincial capital, Kunming is the political, economic and cultural center as well as the transportation and telecommunication hub of Yunnan Province. Kunming Municipality covers 21,000 km2 in gross area, and under its jurisdiction are one city, five districts and 8 counties. Population of the Municipality has added up to 7.21 million. With a history of human activities dating back to over 30,000 years, that of Central-Yunnan culture dating back to over 2,400 years, and that of urban construction dating back to over 1,240 years, Kunming shows unique charms in terms of historical and cultural features, highland scenery and ethnic folk customs. Kunming is a city of enjoyable climate and eternal spring, in praise of which people have the saying, “Weather of Kunming is forever like the spring season and flowers keep blooming in Kunming all the year round.” In Kunming, there is neither freezing cold in winter nor scorching heat in summer.
Thanks to its forever blooming flowers, evergreen plants, picturesque natural scenery and livable environment, Kunming has been evaluated as one of the excellent tourism cities of China, and in the Municipality are numerous noted scenic spots and over 10 national-level golden tourism routes. Kunming is a city of long history and plentiful humanistic scenes. One among the first batch of 24 noted historical and cultural cities publicized in China, Kunming is noted for its deep-rooted history and culture. The Municipality was not only the birthplace of noted Chinese personages such as the great navigator Zheng He and the people’s composer Nie’er, but also the origin of the “September the Ninth Uprising”, “Nation-safeguarding Uprising” and “December the First Student Movement”, all of which exerted tremendous influences on the Chinese history. In the Municipality, 26 ethnic groups have been harmoniously living together since ancient times, and created diversified, colorful and multi-element ethnic cultures.

Since recent years, Kunming has been focusing on bringing its advantages to full play and quickening its development, all of which helped the Municipality yield new achievements in economic and social development. In 2008, the entire Municipality materialized gross regional GDP of 160.54 billion yuan, a 12% increase year on year; gross local financial revenue of 42.519 billion yuan, a 25% increase over the previous year; and general budgetary revenue of 17.5 billion yuan, an increase by 31.5%. Society-wide investment in fixed assets amounted to 105.32 billion yuan, an increase by 28.4%; per capita disposable income of the urban residents saw an actual increase by 13.3%, and net per capita income of the farmers, 8.1%. Among the provincial capitals of western China, regional GDP and local financial revenue of Kunming Municipality respectively ranked the 3rd and 2nd place, whereas its overall economic strength entered the front rank. In 2008, Kunming won many honorary titles including the “Advanced City in Reform and Opening Up of China”, one of the “10 Buoyant Provincial Capitals or Municipalities Directly under the Central Government”, one of the “10 Happiness-brimming Cities of China”, “China’s Best City for Investing in Manufacturing Trades” and the “Best City for Zhejiang Investors”.
